A presentation by Reg Nelemans, Founder and Owner, FashionPower.
Garment industry is the second most polluting industry in the world, mainly because of the dyeing process. Why do so few people care about this?
Worldwide each year 55 million tons of new garments come in the market and only 1% is recycled! In sportswear most functionality is added by chemicals which may affect the body but definitely hurts the environment. Why we keep using them?
Start thinking why do we do the things we do! 80% is determined in the design phase. We definitely have a choice. Feel Responsable, Act Sustainable.
Question 1: What drives you?
I always liked to tell everyone the story that my family is in garmentbusiness for more than 120 years. About 10 years ago somebody mentioned to me; “Great, 120 years in one of the most polluting industries of the world. I was shocked, never realised this before. In general I think we should leave a better world to the next generation than what we received. Try to do things better every day..
Question 2: Why should the delegate attend your presentation?
We managed to make the change to sustainable garments with full transparency for a good value for money price. Before sustainable was an option, now it is what we do..
Question 3: What emerging technologies/trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?
Dope dye will have the biggest effect on our ecological footprint. Our upcycling with Nanotechnology will definitely make a big change for making sportswear functional. Circularity is a must for our sector..
Question 4: What kind of impact do you expect them to have?
Garment industry will be one of the less polluting industries and an example for circular production..
Question 5: What are the barriers that might stand in the way?
Change of mind is needed, sustainability is a quality and quality has a price. A fair price is needed.
